About Jim Everett - The Artist of Jim's Artistry
In Wood |
|
Jim
Everett, the artist of Jim's Artistry in Wood,
first encountered the art form of Intarsia while
reading an article in Wood magazine.

The
article fascinated him, and Jim decided to try
turning his lifetime love of sketching and
woodworking into an art form like Intarsia.
After
using the pattern in the article, he found out
he COULD do it and has been creating artistry in
wood ever since.
|
|
|
|
Jim now
creates all his own patterns, and deviates from
the style of the original art form of Intarsia.
Jim uses
ONLY Western Red Cedar for the art
work, as all the colors you need are in the
cedar. No stain is used, so the challenge
is in the choice of colors available. Knots are
used for eyes in all subjects, be it human,
animal, fish or birds.
|
|
All work
is custom-created for each client, after which
the patterns are destroyed. This
makes each piece a one-of-a-kind heirloom.
Jim has
been doing this art form for about 12 years, and
has recently taken it up a notch by creating
functional art, such as interior & exterior
doors, cabinet doors, and many other off the
wall pieces. Carving and wood burning
are also included to create new, unusual, and
innovative projects. |
|
You may
wonder how this work is done.
The images below show a blanket chest that is a
work in progress:

Starting with subject matter on computer
enlarged to required size, moved to
glass-top drawing table for the pattern
trace to determine cut lines. |

Background relief is carved. |

Pieces cut from different colors of the
red cedar (the antlers are cut from
actual deer antlers). From this point,
we go to shaping with a number of tools. |
| |

After
shaping and sanding, the first of four
spray coats are applied with sanding
between coats. There are 90 pieces for
the deer, log, and shrubs. |
|
| |

The next
step is assembly of the art work, after
which the rest of the blanket chest will
be made, assembled and the final
finishes applied. |
